The presence of elevated Radon levels in
home breathing air is a common health
concern in the Northern Illinois area. Radon
gas is created when Uranium present in local
soils decays. Radon gas is odorless,
tasteless, colorless, and inert. It can be
present in elevated levels in homes of any
age or construction-type. Common entry
points for Radon gas in homes include cracks
in foundation walls and floor slabs, poorly
sealed pipe penetrations, drainage tiles and
pipes, and sumps. Once in the home, Radon
gas can collect and concentrate in
basements, crawl spaces and other low-lying,
closed spaces. Ventilation systems and air
draw can easily transport radon gas to other
parts of the home. Over time, Radon can
build-up to dangerous levels. As human
beings are exposed to elevated levels of
Radon over a period of years, it can have a
significant and detrimental effect on
health, particularly in the form of lung
cancer. The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency has set a maximum
threshold of 4 pico curies (4 pCi) per liter
as a safe level of Radon in breathing air.
According to the U.S.E.P.A. Radon has
been found in homes in all 50 states,
certain U.S. areas are more susceptible than
others, but no location is immune. Almost
half of the homes located in Will County
have radon levels above the threshold
levels. To see the State of Illinois'

Does the home you own, or the home
you're planning on purchasing, have a
dangerous Radon level? The only way to know
for sure is to have a home Radon test. We
believe that homeowners and buyers should be
well-informed regarding the Radon risk in
their area, and determine whether a Radon
test is desirable. Please be aware
that the Surgeon General and the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD) both recommend that every dwelling in
the United States be tested for Radon.
Check My Radon offers Chicago area home
buyers and home sellers prompt,
professional, Illinois-licensed Radon
testing using state of the art continuous
radon monitors.
If your home tests high, Radon
mitigation systems are very effective in
reducing residential Radon levels. Radon
mitigation systems can cost between $700 and
$2500, according to the EPA. If, as a
home-buyer, you choose to test for Radon
before purchasing your home, and elevated
Radon levels are discovered, it may be
incumbent upon the home-seller to bear the
cost of an installed mitigation system. Call
Check My Radon for all your Radon testing
needs, or to obtain a list of
Illinois-licensed Radon mitigators.
